First thing this morning we had a lectorial on semiotics.
What I got from the lectorial:
Semiotics = study of signs - how we interpret images.
Using ICONS (literal representations), SIGNS (indicators that give an association/representation), SYMBOLS (arbitrary representations - not "logical").
Denotation = physical reality
Connotation = subtle inference that inflicts meaning
We also discussed the importance of; cropping, scale, and angle to impart meaning/dynamicism.
When we returned to our studio space we were tasked with creating a visual matrix using imagery we had collected. I felt really stuck/lost during this exercise as I only had a little imagery from the waterfront and the cinema and I hadn't finalised a set of 3 for my matrix. So I spent the time trying to solidify my concept. It got to the point where I was completely over thinking and lost all confidence in myself and my idea. Skye and Fay came and talked to me and tried to reinforce that my idea had merit and that I was getting too hung up on the tangibles - the convo helped but I still felt really frustrated at not having a set of 3 to really get stuck into. As a class we went round looking at each other's visual matrix' and decoding them. This was a good way to test whether their concept was working as a whole - and on the most part it appeared everyone's did. This didn't really do anything for my own confidence! Thankfully I got another opportunity to talk to Fay and Matt and they re-assured me that my concept was interesting and possible. Fay said that the intangible "romance" theme was enough to hold my concept together and that it would be good to do very different activities (not do 3 different picnic locations). We discussed it like it was a guide for the hopeless male of romantic things for him to do with his girlfriend. So I started to feel a bit more positive about my concept again. I drew up an "umbrella" with the word Romance and picked out the key activities I thought worked well with the concept. The 4 that I am going to investigate and collect imagery for are:
*Movies
*Picnics
*Bar
*Sunset
The set homework was to finish our written and visual matrix', work on compositions/collages, get a design book out of the library
After class I went to the library to get out my design book and continue independent work on my concept. I researched locations for my picnic and sunset ideas and put together a table so that I can try and hit each point at the right time of day/most efficiently.

And then on my way home I walked passed the Lighthouse Cinema Cuba, and the Motel Bar on Tory Street to asses the location.

Both locations have signs out front that would be ideal later at night when you can see the lights on them.
