Tuesday 17/3, session 7
Matt gave us a brief InDesign Workshop this morning. Notes to take forward:
When creating a new document make sure facing pages is ticked and you have at least 3mm of bleed.
Have the Pages window open.
In Preferences change Units & Increments to mm. And have the Grid setting relative to the top Margin = 0.
Show hidden characters in your text to check for double spacing etc.
Create your own Paragraph Styles.
After that, I printed out the spreads I had done last night and pinned them up to get some feedback.
When looking at the 3 of them pinned up together the first thing I noticed was that there wasn't a good sense of wholeness with the first 2 spreads having 2 column text and the 3rd spread only having one. Fay agreed. She liked my first spread (Sunset) the best and thought it was the strongest. We discussed my imagery and she liked how in that first one the photograph was working really well with the other elements, whereas in the bar and the movies the imagery was becoming more graphic. She suggested focusing on my imagery and then tweaking my typography later. She also wanted me to utilise the watercolours a bit more - she suggested more of the nice colour coming though in the front martini glass should be added to my sunset composition. As well as making those suggestions, she also discussed "duotoning" the photographs. Skye was good enough to show me what duotoning was so I had a play around with that later in the afternoon.
First things first I looked at adding a photo into my bar composition and came up with this:
I was struggling with adding a photo into my cinema composition so decided to give the duotoning a go instead.
The duotoned photos are a blend of black, and 2 shades of magenta.
Looking at them side by side I personally think I might prefer the black and white. As then I can add some colour to my emphasise some of my text and it won't be over the top, sickly sweet. It will be interesting to get the opinions of my peers and lecturers on Monday.
